Alicante is located in the south of the Valencian Community on the coast of the Mediterranean sea. The population is around 335,000 which makes Alicante the second biggest city in Valencia. The metropolitan area has a population of 770,000 people. It is assumed that the area of Alicante has had inhabitants for over 7,000 years with the first inhabitants arriving as early as 3,000 to 5,000 years B.C. The city itself stands next to the ancient ruins of the Carthaginian settlement established 300 years B.C. Before the Carthaginians, the area had been explored by Greeks and Phoenicians.
